Odor Management and Mitigation

CalRecovery , Inc. has substantial experience in odor generation and management methods.  The company regularly plans, designs, and implements organics processing facilities.  A key element of these facilities is design and operation of odor control systems.  Also, many of the firm’s projects have required managing odors from waste processes, including characterization and mapping of sources and their odors, assisting clients to investigate, respond and resolve odor complaints, recommending methods of odor control and mitigation, and analyzing the effects of meteorology, atmospheric conditions and geographical terrain on odor generation and dispersion.

Relevant project experience includes:

  • ● Providing expert assistance to concerning odor issues, including identification of odor sources and facilities, recommendations for methods of odor control and mitigation, preparation of odor impact management and monitoring plans, and assisting with coordinating the odor impact management plan among regulators and odor emitting facility owners and operators.
  • ● Serving as technical expert to legal counsel representing a governmental entity in a legal dispute over impacts to human receptors from alleged odors emitted from a nearby organics processing facility, including onsite observations of odor sources and intensities, and analysis of local terrain, meteorological conditions, and downwind odor intensities.
  • ● Performing field measurements and analysis of odor sources and intensities from a large composting facility to establish baseline values and potential offsite odor impacts to local human receptors, and identification and recommendation of odor management and control methods and procedures for implementation by the facility operator.
  • ● For a private farming operation, CalRecovery has been providing technical assistance related to the processing of produce residues, including control and treatment of wastewater generated by the processing operation. The company assessed the wastewater flows and identified issues related to odor emissions and potential methods of controlling odor from the operation’s wastewater storage pond. CalRecovery prepared written recommendations for modifying the produce processing operation and for improving mixing and aeration of the liquid storage pond, and negotiated operating conditions and performance guarantees with potential suppliers of pond aeration systems.
