Landfill Mining & Reclamation
Members of CalRecovery, Inc. are well versed in landfill mining and reclamation for purposes of recovering materials and landfill space for beneficial uses. Staff from the company have designed and implemented programs to characterize the contents of landfills and designed systems for recovering high-quality soil and other materials for remanufacture and/or for energy conversion. The following project descriptions are representative of the type of work conducted in these areas and demonstrate the familiarity of CalRecovery personnel with the reclamation of resources from landfills and the characteristics of municipal solid waste and determining beneficial uses for recovered materials.
Landfill reclamation, municipality in California
CalRecovery analyzed the use of landfill mining (i.e., excavation and processing of wastes) of an unlined landfill area as a method of controlling groundwater contamination, as well as of providing additional landfill capacity within the same geographical footprint. CalRecovery described the necessary technology and its cost and compared the costs of conventional landfilling and site remediation with those of landfilling and site remediation using landfill reclamation technology. As part of the feasibility study, CalRecovery prepared a field test plan for conducting exploratory excavation of landfill material, for processing and evaluating the processed fractions, and for determining the quantities of recovered, marketable soil fraction and of residual waste that would require land disposal in a permitted solid waste landfill facility. CalRecovery subsequently monitored the pilot landfill mining operation, analyzed the results of the pilot test, and prepared recommendations to the municipality.
Optimization of municipal landfill use through mining and reclamation
CalRecovery analyzed and evaluated innovative technologies for processing landfilled municipal waste and recovering materials for marketing or for beneficial uses. The evaluation included technical and financial assessments, as well as the conduct of demonstration landfill mining operations and environmental measurements and analyses to determine technical, economic, and environmental performance of the processing equipment and systems. Thorough characterizations of the recovered materials were performed as well as a comprehensive market assessment to assess demand and required commodity specifications and prices.
