Land Disposal

Our personnel have long recognized the importance of having both a well founded waste reduction and recycling program and a sound final disposal strategy. The relative quantities of materials that are finally disposed on the land depend upon the specific requirements of the community. We have participated in a variety of projects related to land disposal, as depicted by the following representative projects.

American Samoa Power Authority -- CalRecovery has been assisting the Authority in its role as the provider of waste management services on the South Pacific island of American Samoa. Some of the work has included the remediation and closure of the island's dump; the design and implementation of a modern sanitary landfill; and monitoring of the collection, recycling, and disposal operations.

Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands -- A landfill operational training course was conducted on the island of Saipan. Some of the participants included a representative of the mayor's office, staff from the Department of Environmental Quality, and supervisory and operating staff of the solid waste division of the islands of Saipan and Tinian. The training program was divided into classroom instruction and field training, which included cell construction, compaction and covering of waste, and traffic management.

U.S. EPA/SWANA -- Innovative technologies for managing municipal solid wastes were analyzed and evaluated. A comprehensive evaluation was performed of the feasibility of processing landfilled wastes to recover usable materials and to recover land resources (landfill mining). The EPA has used the results of this study as the basis for determining landfill mining as a feasible technology for managing landfilled wastes and resource recovery under the appropriate conditions.
