Composting

Our personnel have been actively involved in all aspects of composting organic residues since the early 1950s. The firm has conducted work dealing with composting in the United States and other countries and is internationally recognized for its expertise in the field.

We are thoroughly familiar with the properties of the materials to be composted and with the degree of preparation that is necessary for the various uses and markets for the compost product. We have worked with facilities ranging in scale from about 10 tons per month to 700 tons per day. We have also worked with various systems, either windrow or enclosed, and are thoroughly familiar with the advantages and disadvantages of the designs, as well as their potential environmental impacts. Members of the company have evaluated entire systems in terms of technical, financial, and environmental viability.

Private Client -- A design and permitting documents are being prepared for a large-scale biosolids composting facility. The work includes development of design criteria and performance objectives, as well as analysis, selection, and specification of the composting technology, the environmental control systems (including those for odor control), the pre-processing system for green waste and other bulking agents, and the post-processing system for the compost. The firm also is developing the resource and infrastructure requirements, and operating plan for the facility. In addition to the design work, the firm is assisting in the preparation of the environmental assessment and is serving as liaison with the pertinent government agencies that issue permits for construction and operation.

Private Client, Mauritius -- Members of CalRecovery served as an independent evaluator of a comprehensive study to evaluate the marketability of compost produced from yard waste. The work included a review and suggested modifications of all the tasks conducted for the analysis (survey of potential compost users, technical evaluation of yard waste composting, economic analysis of the process, and recommendations for the establishment of a pilot composting operation).

U.S. EPA -- A design manual for composting yard waste and MSW was prepared for municipal officials and designers to allow them to develop a composting program suitable to their needs. The design manual discusses the composting process, materials most suitable for composting, factors that affect composting, as well as cost and environmental impacts.

City of Santa Rosa, California -- CalRecovery assisted the City in the implementation of its biosolids co-composting facility. The work included an analysis to select a bulking agent, preparation of a plan for startup operations (scheduling, feedstocks, pre-processing requirements, performance monitoring, curing and post-processing, and odor control), and an analysis of potential regional markets for the finished product.
