Collection

A properly designed and implemented collection system is critical to the success of the overall solid waste management program. Collection is a cost component of solid waste management, and can be equipment intensive. Key issues that we consider in developing collection systems or procuring the services include:

  • Route design
  • Collection method
  • Integration with processing and disposal system
  • Needs of community
  • Worker safety
  • Service provider (public or private)
  • Rate structure
  • Transfer/transport
U.S. Agency for International Development -- The work and services performed in the City of Maracaibo, Venezuela were as follows: 1) an examination of the City's existing collection and processing operations, including technology, operation, management, and financing; 2) identification of the strength and weaknesses, efficiencies and inefficiencies, cost effectiveness, and ineffectiveness of the City's existing operations; and 3) presentation of recommendations to the City Council for substantial improvements in the systems.

City of New Haven, Connecticut -- An economically feasible plan was designed and developed for a plastics collection and recycling program. The work included an analysis of and recommendations regarding types of containers, methods of collection, collection of mixed or segregated plastics, labor and equipment requirements, and processing and marketing.

Private Client -- Field tests of various types of collection vehicles were conducted for a private client in the State of Minnesota. The testing included the conduct of a time and motion study, as well as general evaluation of performance, on collection vehicles for source-separated recyclables from single-family residences, multi-family units, and commercial businesses. A detailed estimate of capital and operating costs was prepared for each vehicle.
